The 5 Best Antivirus with Firewall

Going back about ten years, Windows users would generally select separate antivirus and personal firewall programs.

Nowadays, most vendors combine both as part of their “Internet Security” product ranges, which often results in individuals using antivirus and firewall products from the same vendor.

Some IT professionals would debate the need for dedicated firewall software on modern Windows PCs anyway. Since Windows XP, the operating system has come with a firewall of its own, although in the case of XP, this was “inbound only,” so didn’t prevent malicious programs from making contact with the outside world.

Since Windows Vista, the Windows Firewall has worked in two directions, making the case for a third-party firewall product rather less convincing. This hasn’t stopped nearly all Internet security vendors offering firewalls of their own, which usually disable the Windows equivalent on installation.

Some vendors have gone even further, and included a firewall with their standard antivirus product. It is those vendors that we discuss in this top five round-up.

Usually, firewall products form part of each vendors more expensive “Internet Security” product, but the five companies here have decided to throw a firewall in with their entry-level product as an extra enticement.

This is where things get interesting. It turns out that only two of the five products on this list are products we could sincerely recommend. The remaining three, in their efforts to becomes “jacks of all trades” have only succeeded in becoming “masters of none.” One could reasonably argue that the vendors in question would have been better off investing more time getting the antivirus part of their products right before throwing in the distraction of a firewall.

The two products at the top of this list are well worth your time and attention. One of them, ZoneAlarm Pro, has long been a household name in firewalls anyway, and its presence at number three in our overall product roundup is perhaps more surprising than its presence here.

Once you get half-way through the table, however, you may find yourself better off buying a better antivirus product, and leaving the firewall part to Windows!

Winner – Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus

Logo

Positives: Fast, full of features, well-designed

Negatives: Not the cheapest – but still the best

Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus will need little introduction to those who have browsed elsewhere on the Best Antivirus website. This product topped our overall league table AND our list of the Five Best Antiviruses for Windows. It has retained this reputation across two versions.

Really, the fact that the Webroot product includes a firewall as standard is just the icing on the cake. This software made easy work of all of our real life tests and we loved the interface. Even without the firewall and the various other supplementary features, we’re still confident that SecureAnywhere would have featured high up our league table.

Webroot do seem to know they have a good product on their hands. It’s by no means the cheapest on the market, and the trial period is just 14 days, compared to the industry standard of 30. Despite this, we think most people will be convinced to stay with this product long before the trial period is up.

2. ZoneAlarm PRO Antivirus + Firewall

Logo

Positives: Includes online backup, provides the security of a household name in firewalls

Negatives: Installation slightly tedious

It seems only right that ZoneAlarm PRO Antivirus + Firewall should be near the top of a roundup of antivirus products that include a firewall element. After all, PC users have been turning to ZoneAlarm for firewall protection for many years.

The generous pricing of ZoneAlarm is particularly notable. The product was on offer when we reviewed it, with a price of just $34.95 for a license covering three computers. For a package that covers antivirus and firewall protection, and makes a good job of both, this is great value.

We weren’t too sure about ZoneAlarm during our initial install, which took longer than we might have expected, but once the product was loaded onto our test PC we found nothing to criticise beyond slightly high RAM usage during virus scans.

We’d have been surprised if ZoneAlarm had disappointed us as a firewall, but we didn’t expect to be equally impressed with the antivirus capabilities. This is a product we recommend strongly.

3. eScan Anti-Virus 11

Screen Shot 2013-09-18 at 10.12.43

Positives: Good features set, with antispam included as well as a firewall

Negatives: Missed a test infection, quirky interface

It’s a shame that by the time we get to eScan Anti-Virus 11, which comes third in our roundup, we are already in amongst products that fail to earn our full recommendation.

eScan is a classic example of a product that tries to do too much: Initial impressions are good, with a features list that includes antispam and a firewall, and a price-tag that’s below average.

Sadly, however, the product doesn’t quite make the grade. Most significantly, it managed to miss one of our test viruses, but we also disliked the interface, which was unnecessarily complicated.

There are some redeeming features, such as round-the-clock live support, but we’d still choose other products before turning to this one.

4. McAfee Antivirus Plus 2013

Screen Shot 2013-09-02 at 11.19.08

Positives: Decent user interface

Negatives: Feels outdated, poor test results

We’ll get straight to the point: At Best Antivirus, we’ve reviewed all the major antivirus products, and McAfee Antivirus Plus 2013 was probably one of our biggest disappointments. The product only finds its way into this particular roundup because it comes with a firewall!

We would have been much happier if McAfee has kept the firewall back for a more expensive product, done away with the “plus” in the product name, and put a bit more effort into bringing performance up to modern standards.

During virus scans, McAfee hammers the CPU and memory like the much-despised “bloatware” products of old. And despite this, it still completely missed one of our real-life viruses.

The people at McAfee would do well to look at their competitors’ products, and make some major changes in time for the next version.

5. Panda Antivirus Pro 2014

Screen Shot 2013-09-02 at 11.16.01

Positives: Pretty styling, Windows vulnerability checking

Negatives: Missed a test virus, long install process

We did warn in our introduction that not all of the products in this round up truly met our desired standards, and as we get down to Panda Antivirus Pro 2014, the phrase “scraping the barrel” starts to spring to mind.

However, Panda does have a few good qualities: The user interface is clear and bright, and clearly owes a lot to the Windows 8 interface. We also liked the fact the program scans for vulnerabilities in Windows.

Unfortunately, we found ourselves unable to recommend the product when it missed one of our test threats. When there are free products out there that can find them all, we simply cannot recommend commercial products that don’t meet the standard.

If Panda put a bit more work into this product between now and the next version, we have a feeling it could move up our league table quite significantly. For now, however, it sadly languishes amongst our overall bottom five.
